Lab Grown Diamonds

Diamonds made in a laboratory are famed for their beauty, brilliance, and guaranteed origin. Learn more about the impact and benefits of lab-grown diamonds, as well as why this environmentally friendly option is ideal for you.

What is a lab-grown diamond?

Lab-grown diamonds are a marvel of innovation, crafted in a controlled environment to possess the same chemical and physical properties as natural diamonds. They are produced in a laboratory setting without the negative environmental or human toll of mining.

What makes them even more remarkable is their price.

Lab-grown diamonds offer an emotional and financial advantage, allowing you to embrace the brilliance of a diamond at a more affordable cost. By choosing a lab-grown diamond, you can celebrate your love without compromising on quality or breaking the bank.

Lab-grown diamond vs Mined diamond

Lab-grown diamonds are produced in a laboratory setting without the negative environmental or human toll of mining. With naked eyes, you can’t tell the difference between them, even trained gemologists cannot tell the difference between a polished mined diamond and a polished lab-grown diamond without using advanced technology.

How are lab-grown diamonds made?

A lab-grown diamond will undergo one of two processes: High Pressure-High Temperature(HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)

  • High Pressure-High Temperature(HPHT)

In this process, a small diamond seed is placed in a high-pressure chamber along with a carbon source, such as graphite. The chamber is then subjected to extreme heat and pressure, replicating the conditions found deep within the Earth where natural diamonds are formed. The combination of intense pressure and high temperature causes the carbon atoms to bond together and crystallize around the diamond seed, gradually growing into a larger diamond. The HPHT method allows for the controlled creation of diamonds with the same physical and chemical properties as mined diamonds. This process enables the production of lab-grown diamonds that exhibit the same brilliance, durability, and beauty as their natural counterparts.

  • Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)

In this process, a small diamond seed is placed in a sealed chamber, along with a carbon-rich gas such as methane. The chamber is heated to extreme temperatures, usually above 800 degrees Celsius, while maintaining a low pressure. As the gas decomposes, carbon atoms are deposited onto the diamond seed, layer by layer, allowing the diamond to grow. This process typically takes several weeks or even months to produce a fully-grown diamond. The result is a lab-grown diamond that possesses the same chemical and physical properties as a natural diamond, with exceptional clarity and brilliance. The CVD method offers a controlled and efficient way to create diamonds, providing an alternative to traditional mining methods while ensuring high-quality and sustainable diamond production.

How Are Lab-Created Diamonds Graded And Evaluated

Lab-created diamonds are graded and evaluated using similar methods as mined diamonds, taking into consideration the same criteria known as the "Four Cs": carat weight, color, clarity, and cut. The carat weight measures the size of the diamond, while color grading assesses the presence of any color tint. Clarity grading determines the presence of internal or external flaws, and the cut grade evaluates the diamond's proportions and quality of craftsmanship.

In terms of the method used to create lab-grown diamonds, there are primarily two techniques: High-Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).

Both methods result in the growth of diamond crystals that are chemically and optically identical to mined diamonds. After the growth process, lab-created diamonds undergo the same grading and evaluation processes as mined diamonds to determine their quality and value.

The most popular diamond certification labs are The Gemological Institute of America (GIA)Antwerp World Diamond Center (AWDC)American Gem Society (AGS)International Gemological Institute (IGI), and Gemological Science International (GSI).

Guess which celebrities are wearing lab-grown diamonds?

Hailey Beiber, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, Joe Jonas, Taylor Swift, Kendall Jenner, Chrissy Teigan, Julia Roberts, and Reese Witherspoon are just a few of the Hollywood stars who have selected lab-grown diamond jewelry for the red carpet.

Why choose lab-grown diamonds?

By choosing a lab-grown diamond, you can enjoy the brilliance of the diamond without the human and environmental costs associated with mining.

  • What is so good about lab-created diamonds?

Quality: The quality of lab-created diamonds is better than a mined diamond as they have Trained gemologists and experts cannot differentiate between lab-grown and mined diamonds without specialized equipment.

Wide range of options: Lab-grown diamonds offer a wide variety of options in terms of sizes, shapes, colors, and clarity. Whether you desire a classic round brilliant cut or a fancy colored diamond, lab-grown diamonds offer a range of choices to express your individuality.

Value: Lab-grown diamonds typically offer better value for your money compared to mined diamonds. Lab-created diamonds are often priced more affordably due to their controlled production process and shorter supply chain. Choosing a lab-grown diamond allows you to obtain a larger, higher-quality diamond for the same budget.

  • Are lab-grown diamonds conflict free?

Yes, lab-grown diamonds are considered conflict-free. Lab-grown diamonds can and should be certified. It is inadvisable to purchase any diamond without diamond certification. Diamonds should go through a grading process that considers the 4Cs.

How Lab-Created Diamonds Are Changing The Jewelry Industry

  • Ethical and sustainable practices

By eliminating the need for diamond mining, lab-grown diamonds reduce the environmental impact associated with traditional mining practices. They also ensure a conflict-free supply chain, providing consumers with a choice that aligns with their values of responsible sourcing and ethical production.

  • Diverse options

Lab-created diamonds offer a wide range of options in terms of sizes, shapes, colors, and clarity. This diversity in options enhances the creativity and individuality of diamond jewelry designs.

  • Technological advancements

The production of lab-created diamonds has benefitted from continuous technological advancements. The development of innovative methods such as High-Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) has made the process more efficient and cost-effective.

  • Changing consumer perception

Lab-created diamonds are reshaping consumer perceptions about diamonds and challenging the notion that mined diamonds are the only desirable option. As more people become aware of the benefits of lab-grown diamonds, including their ethical and sustainable attributes, they are embracing these alternatives with enthusiasm. The growing acceptance of lab-created diamonds is transforming the way consumers view and value diamond jewelry.
